OUR PROJECTS

The first school that was helped was Sithyvinayagar Maha School in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. Being on the East coast it was severely hit by the December 2004 tsunami. The principal of the school had contacted EMACE for help when they were left without a potable water supply. Our first contribution of just under £1000 paid for the complete installation of the supply, including pump, pipework and taps.

Realising how such a relatively small amount can go a long way in Sri Lanka, and having registered Life’s Essentials as a charity, we set about raising the money for our next project, to help complete the installation of a water and sanitation system at Hatigamuwa school, situated in one of the poorest and most arid farming areas in Sri Lanka. The installation provided piped water and toilets for the 350 children, where previously all water had to be drawn from the nearby village well.

A substantial contribution to this project was raised by Oakham School in Rutland through a school disco, a non-uniform day and cash collections.

Donations from Life’s Essentials have bought school equipment for war-displaced children in Kopal Christian College in Jaffna, which was in the centre of the fighting during the civil war that ended in 2009.

More recently we have supported a “Medicamp” that provided essential medical assistance for villagers and children of an orphanage in Nugawela village in the North-West province of Sri Lanka.
